NAACP 2014 Award Recipients


Several of the 28 members of Women United for Community Action (WUCA) were present to accept the NAACP 2014 Award presented in appreciation of the group’s support. State Representative Sam Rasoul, (pictured left) congratulated and praised the group’s efforts.

The group will again host the popular Fashion Show at 2:00 p.m. March 22, at the Holiday Inn, Ordway. Please mark your calendars and continue to support this grand event.

The Roanoke Chapter of the Girl Friends welcomes Saundra Fenner Butcher. The installation ceremony took place on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Holiday Inn, Ordway. The Roanoke Chapter is one of 47 chapters nationally located throughout the United States. Janice Burk (left) is president of the local chapter. Francine McLaughlin was the sponsor of the newest member, Saundra Butcher (center).

Church’s Youth of the Year


Winners of Pilgrim Baptist Church’s Youth of the Year (from left): 8-year-old Diamond Dance-–3rd grader at Westside Elementary School, first runner-up, daughter of Marlene Diamond; Ricky Shifflett, Jr.–6th grader at Lucy Addison Middle School, 2nd runner-up, son of Brenda Shifflett and 1st place winner, Curtis Staples, an 11th grader at Salem High School, son of Tasha Steele. Congratulations are wished to all the winners and continued success in their endeavors.
