Grocer donating $100 gift cards to families at “Happy Homes, Full Fridges” event Kroger Mid-Atlantic and Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley (HFHRV) have partnered to present “Happy Homes, Full Fridges,” an event to celebrate homeowners who have worked in partnership with HFHRV to purchase affordable housing. As part of the event, Kroger will present each family with a $100 Kroger gift card. Some 235 families are expected to attend, bringing Kroger’s total donation to $23,500.
The event will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at the Lakeside Kroger store, located at 161 Electric Road in Salem. To allow for households with varying schedules to attend, Kroger will present the gift cards to recipients between two timeframes: 7- 9 a.m. and 5-7 p.m.
“With Kroger Mid-Atlantic’s home office here in Roanoke, we’re especially honored to help make sure the fridges are full for these homeowners and their families,” said Allison McGee, corporate affairs manager for Kroger Mid-Atlantic. “We appreciate all the good Habitat for Humanity does for our community and we’re proud to support this program as part of our Zero Hunger Zero Waste commitment.”
Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley is a non-profit organization founded on the principle that everyone should have a durable, safe place to live. Since it’s founding, HFHRV has built 244 homes in the Roanoke Valley. Funding for the homes comes from a number of sources, ranging from its ReStore retail store to private partnerships, like Kroger’s “Happy Homes, Full Fridges.”
“This is a special event for Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley because much like homeownership having a positive impact on the community, so does ensuring that families are well fed and nourished,” said Executive Director Karen Mason of Habitat For Humanity of the Roanoke Valley. “We’re looking forward to reuniting with the homeowners we worked so closely with over the years, and to share Kroger’s commitment of keeping communities healthy by fighting hunger.”
At the event, several Habitat homeowners will share their experiences of becoming a homeowner, and local dignitaries are expected to attend. Both Habitat for Humanity of the Roanoke Valley and Kroger representatives also will be in attendance.
