Two $1000.00 awards will be given to qualifying local area high school students by Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (The Boule). Applicants who demonstrate need will be judged on their academic standing, personal achievements, community involvement, and three (3) letters of recommendation from members of the school administration and/or teachers and one (1) character reference. Local high school Guidance Coordinators receives official application materials the week of April 1. For a student to be considered, the committee must receive all of the required information by May 11. Awards will be announced to the recipients on/or before May 26. The awards will be celebrated with recipients and their families during a private organizational dinner meeting on Thursday, June 4.
The fraternity began in 1904 in Philadelphia, PA, the oldest Greek-letter fellowship for predominately African American men and has 108 Subordinate Boules in the US and the Bahamas. The local organization was founded in 1983 and is known as the Roanoke-Lynchburg, Virginia Beta Phi chapter of the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.
In 1995 Beta Phi Boule initiated and has maintained annual academic recognition awards. The purpose is to provide financial support to SW Virginia area; Africa-American graduating high school seniors who desire advanced education and who have attended one high school for the last two (2) years.
