Volunteer members of Roanoke Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Beta Chi Omega Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Roanoke Chapter Continental Societies, Inc., joined ranks in an effort to “Go Green and Keep Roanoke Clean.”
Approximately twenty volunteers, including Gloria Jackson and Dontese Johnson, were present early Saturday morning, April 4, to collect trash along Hershberger Road and make a partial pick-up on Cove Road. The Clean Valley Council provided bags, gloves, vests and several reachers to assist with the pick-up. Some volunteers brought their own reachers and the Continentals provided all of the others. Volunteers dedicated one to two hours of service each for the clean-up. The six teams collected 24 bags of trash that included plenty of paper, bottles, plastics and cans that could have been placed into recycle bins. Bottles of water and energy bars were distributed as teams returned their vests and other gear used for the pick-up project.
Delta President Diane Jones, Continental President Gloria King and AKA Basileus, Pamela Edwards, express deepest gratitude to the members for their support, and especially to City Councilwoman, Anita Price who always comes ready to pitch–in and work!
All Roanoke citizens are invited and encouraged to join in this effort to “Go Green” by recycling, reusing, and reducing what we send to our landfills. Let’s all try to do a better job of keeping our communities clean by stopping the littering! The clean-up event was organized by Delta Sigma Theta’s Adopt a Highway Committee Chair, Donna Lee.
