Cable provider heads partnership to curb summer learning loss
Children who reside at the Villages at Lincoln now have access to quality books and learning materials in an inviting environment right in their own neighborhood. Easy access to these materials will encourage these students to beat summer learning loss and help them return to school ready to learn.
According to the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA), summer learning loss is a growing problem in today’s society, particularly in low-income populations. The average summer learning loss in math and reading for American students amounts to one month per year. More troubling is that it disproportionately affects low-income students: they lose two months of reading skills, while their higher-income peers make slight gains.
Cox Communications partnered with the City of Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority (CRRHA) to create and furnish the Cox Reading Corner at the Villages at Lincoln Community Center to ensure these children who likely do not have the chance to attend summer camp or visit the library still have an opportunity to exercise their minds during summer vacation.
CRRHA is dedicated to improving lives and building a better community in the Roanoke Valley. This partnership with Cox demonstrates how together through public-private partnership we can achieve this and make a positive impact on the youth in our community,” said Glenda Edwards Goh, (CRRHA) executive director.
Cox employees installed the reading corner, which includes bookshelves stocked with quality books, comfortable seating, and a computer station in a vibrant, inviting space. Additionally, Cox employees were joined by Senator John Edwards, Delegate Sam Rasoul, and Roanoke City Mayor David Bowers at an unveiling of the Cox Reading Corner where volunteers read to the children.
