Larry Jones, co-owner of Screamin Vegan Restaurant, is a proud product of his environment. Born and raised in Roanoke, Jones says it’s an honor to serve vegan food as well as provide a wellness center to the same community that helped raise him into the man he is today.
“While opening a business doesn’t necessarily guarantee community support and engagement, we are fortunate because, since day one, people have shown a willingness to spend their hard-earned money with us. We never, ever take that for granted,” he said.
Jones’s decision to open Screamin Vegan at 2715 Melrose Avenue in Feb. 2021 was heavily impacted by witnessing his loved ones battle various health issues.
“Growing up, not many places like this existed. I vividly remember this restaurant called ‘Goodie Shop’ and they sold everything from sweet potato tarts to other favorites. If more vegan restaurants were a thing back in the day, many of my loved ones would have made better choices and avoided things like diabetes and high blood pressure,” Jones said.
After the Melrose location enjoyed several months of growth, Jones and co-owner John English, have opened a second location at 902 Memorial Ave. Individual items range from the $3.50 onion rings to $10.00 crab cake salad and everything is 100% plant-based.
People don’t understand, Jones explained, just how important small steps are to one’s health journey.
“I want people to know that vegan food doesn’t have to be boring,” he said. “Our most popular selections include patty melts, hot dogs, and vegan chop steaks. Often, we are told that our food doesn’t even taste plant-based.”
Many of Jones’ regular customers have been supporting Screamin Vegan since its grand opening.
“The first time I walked through the doors, they made me feel like a valued patron. Not only are the menu options cost-efficient, but they are really good too,” said Courtney Walker, an avid follower of the eatery.
Building connections within the community has been vital to Jones’ success. In recent months, Screamin Vegan has become more of a draw for prospective patrons in the area.
“I may be the face of Screamin Vegan but without the help and support of countless individuals, I wouldn’t be here. I’m excited to see what the future holds,” he said before adding, “There are many benefits to eating vegan – protection against certain cancers, lowering of blood sugar levels, and kidney function improvements, among other things. I want to help as many people as possible live a healthier lifestyle.”
