Center will close its doors September 11, unless sufficient funding is secured
Founded in 1982, the Northwest Child Development Center (NWCDC) has served low income families with young children in the northwest quadrant of Roanoke City for more than 32 years. It provides quality child-care, early childhood development and educational opportunities for families who can least afford to pay for these vital, needed services.
The NWCDC depends on grants funded by various agencies and financial contributions from the community for its survival. Therefore it suffered a devastating blow when grant funding was not awarded this year! As a result the Center finds itself faced with a terrible decision—to close its doors no later than September 11, 2015 at 6:00 p.m.–UNLESS sufficient funding and pledges are made to secure it through June of 2016.
This will negatively impact the children, devastate their families and the community served. The staff will lose jobs and other support services as well.
The Board of Directors has worked tirelessly to keep the center up and running through fund-raising efforts, private donations and personal contributions from Board members. The center has been able to maintain daily operations and no employee has suffered the loss of a paycheck!
The NWCDC has the capacity to serve 85 children. It is one of few centers in the Roanoke Valley that provides transportation for day care, open daily, 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., with elementary students enrolled in its after-school program.
Mrs. Jaqueline Wiggins, new executive director, has updated the curriculum, introduces new practices to enhance the development of social skills of the children, trained the staff and established new policies. Her experience, education and enthusiasm have combined to create a top-notch early child development and educational program for the day-care center.
To remain open the NWCDC must raise funds immediately and secure pledges of monthly contributions from donors through June, 2016!
A special appeal is made to churches, civic, social and Fraternal organizations and individuals who are stakeholders throughout the City Please mail or drop off contributions to: Northwest Child Development Center, 1523 Melrose Ave., NW, Roanoke, VA 24017. All contributions are tax deductible. All contributions will receive a receipt through mail or in person at the time of donation.
LeRoy Worley is NWCDC Board of Directors president.
