“Creating novels that relate to our daily lives,” is the theme of the literary contributions of Joseph Richard Turner, Jr., a new author on the scene whose most recent book is titled “Slick Kin Folks.”
Whether or not families are willing to openly admit it, everyone has at least one relative they try to avoid at all cost, Turner contends.
The first book signing event will be on Sunday, Oct. 25, 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.., in the Pilgrim Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 1415 Eighth St. NW. (Please RSVP to Linda L Johnson-Turner, Mgr., (540)562-4426.
Joseph is a native of Jackson Michigan who relocated to Hazlehurst Mississippi at age 5 but spent most of his adult life in Memphis TN which he considers home. Following his 1977 graduation from South Panola High School, Batesville, MS he enlisted into the US Marine Corps. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps, graduating as a chef. After discharge Joseph returned to school at Shelby State Community College, Memphis TN, majoring in Dietary and Food Service Management. He finally decided upon a new career as security officer for several companies over the past 17 years.
Through it all Joseph always had a passion for writing but never took it seriously until 2002 when most of his projects began as short stories and poems. His first book, Standing in the Rain, was published in 2003.
Slick Kin Folks is his second book as he believes in family values and morals and wants to write stories everyone can relate to emotionally and spiritually. His focus centers on family issues rarely discussed openly. His ultimate desire is to attract other professionals and would love to have Slick Kin Folks catch the attention of such greats as Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Harvey and Ellen Degeneres and hopefully become a feature movie.
