Before getting her own nationally syndicated daytime talk show in 2021, Jennifer Hudson was an acclaimed writer, actress and Grammy award-winning musician. The American Idol alum once penned, “If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere. Honey, I must be going somewhere special then.”
For Darlene Lewis, those words aren’t just a powerful quote – they perfectly encapsulate various chapters in her life.
Since 2015, the Roanoke native has overseen the Hope Center, an independent community central ground run by and for the people. In addition to food and clothing distributions, job readiness initiatives for adults and after-school programs for youth are also provided.
Over the last decade, Lewis has pretty much seen it all – from people picking themselves up from rock bottom to become success stories to valuable alliances from outside the community joining in solidarity for a greater purpose.
Lewis surrounds herself with honest people who are just as passionate as her about making a difference.
Her team consists of Communications Manager Brianna Taylor, Assistant Communications Manager Ashley Pannell, Associate Director Donnie Dixon, Maintenance Manager Alice Brown, Program Director Shakima Carpenter, After School Director Naomi Clements, Operations Manager Yolanda Gibbs as well as a dedicated Board of Directors.
“We have gone through a lot of tough times at the Hope Center, but we’ve managed to still be around and do the necessary work for the community. This all began by first listening to the needs of the community. Sometimes, you have an idea of what needs to be done but until you truly listen to the people, you don’t know,” Lewis said. “We are equipped to help those in need. We’ve become a place where needs are met.”
Earlier this month, Lewis got the opportunity to share her story on a national platform.
As she explained, “Out of a pool of nearly 125 remarkable women from all over the country, five were chosen to appear on the Jennifer Hudson Show. I was blessed to be one of them. It was my first time in Hollywood, and the experience was better than anything that I could have imagined.”
Continuing, Lewis added, “All of the trip’s expenses were paid for. I left on April 13 and returned three days later. I feel so humbled. My goal has never been to be in the spotlight. In the process of staying true to my life’s calling, this opportunity presented itself. I’m honored that others felt my story was worthy of such a national platform. My episode will air nationally on May 22.”
