Jamar “Chris” Dunn punches ticket to Golden Gloves Nationals
Roanoke’s own Jamar “Chris” Dunn continues his incredible run through the amateur boxing ranks, adding another major victory to his growing list of accomplishments.
This past Saturday, April 26, Dunn returned to Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD – the same venue where he captured the Virginia/North Carolina Golden Gloves title in March – to compete in the Golden Gloves Regional Championship. Representing Champ’s Gym, a division of the Melrose Athletic Club, Inc., and proudly carrying the banner of the City of Roanoke, Dunn once again showcased his elite skills and relentless work ethic.
Facing off against Luis Portillo of Waldorf, MD in the 154-pound open division, Dunn delivered a dominant performance.
Controlling the pace from the opening bell, Dunn’s sharp combinations, footwork, and defensive prowess overwhelmed his opponent, leading to a unanimous decision victory.
With this win, Dunn advances to the prestigious Golden Gloves National Tournament, set to take place in Tulsa, OK, during the week of May 11–18, 2025. He will have the opportunity to compete against the best amateur fighters from across the country, with the chance to further cement his status as one of boxing’s brightest young talents.
Dunn’s continued success is a testament not only to his tireless dedication but also to the outstanding coaching and support he receives from his team at Champ’s Gym – Jason Dunn, Cori Dunn, Jamie Henderson, Donte Dunnaville, and Victor Banks. Their commitment to nurturing local talent is paying off in a big way, and the entire Roanoke community is rallying behind Chris as he prepares to take on the national stage.
Chris! Roanoke is behind you all the way – bring that national title home!
