Jeremy Batchelor

Jeremy Batchelor was recently recognized by Education Insider as one of the Top Ten Superintendents of 2025. Batchelor is a seasoned leader committed to advancing public education. He has worn many hats, from juvenile probation officer to chief of staff. Currently, he serves as the superintendent of the Youngstown City School District, (YCSD) in Ohio where he inspires educators to serve with heart and resilience.

“Public education is under threat, with legislative changes at the state and federal levels impacting funding and operations,” Batchelor explains and puts full faith in his mission to “defend public education by informing communities about its value, the inequities faced and the pride taken in meeting challenges others may not.” Batchelor prides himself as a man who “views criticism as a catalyst rather than a barrier to action.”

Early in his educational career Batchelor was employed by Roanoke City Public Schools. He began his tenure at YCSD in 2018 and became superintendent in 2023. Throughout his career he has made significant strides in building a culture that is data-driven, fostering academic improvement, enhancing communication and cultivating relationships with scholars and staff. Batchelor has a focus driven style hinged on raising educational benchmarks, collaborative progress and building strong partnerships to advance student achievement and district growth.

“My advice to emerging professionals in education is to lead with purpose and humility remembering that leadership is not about title but service,” said Batchelor. “Never stop believing in young people’s potential, even when they become difficult to handle. When given voice and responsibility, they rise to the occasion.”

Jeremy Batchelor’s leadership has inspired countless educators and students setting a standard for future generations to follow.

Batchelor, a Youngstown, Ohio native is the son of the late Rev. George Batchelor and Eileen Batchelor. He is the grandson of the late Shirley Bernard and Ruth Poindexter Duckett, both former Roanokers and the great grandson of Ossie and Ethel Duckett and Silas and Rebecca Poindexter. The Duckett and Poindexter families are proud of his achievements… the legacy continues.
