The Physical & Mental Health Committee of the Roanoke Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Sorority Inc. held an exceptional presentation in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness held annually worldwide and observed at the local October chapter meeting.
A representative from the American Cancer Society in Roanoke, provided information with supporting literature on the importance of mammograms- early detection, factors that could lower your cancer risk, staying informed with the latest published news information center available 365 days a year including phone, email or live chats and programs are available in the Roanoke Valley such as Road to Recovery (Rides to Treatment). The chapter members dressed in pink for this special occasion.
With November 14, as World Diabetes Day and November being World’s National Diabetes Month, an excellent presentation was given by a representative from Carilion Diabetes Clinic at the Delta’s November 14, chapter meeting. Members were provided with supporting literature on the importance of living healthy lives with healthy diets; reducing stress; improving blood sugars; exercise; keeping weight and blood sugar levels under control; and knowing your A1C test results which measures your blood sugar over 2-3 months with a physician and their prescribed treatment for those living with diabetes.
There was also a review and discussion of the three types of Diabetes: Types 1, and 2 and Gestational Diabetes. Also presented were risk factors for diabetes: overweight, age greater than 45, high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, decreased activity and family background. African American’s are at high risk for Type 2 Diabetes.
Living with Diabetes is challenging, but it is important to remember that making healthy choices can have a big effect on the course of the disease and your quality of life.
