Jonathan Murrill is the type of artist who can draw inspiration at a moment’s notice. The latest painting from the Roanoke College graduate is a mural that honors Tiphany Helm, a beloved community member who goes above and beyond to make a real difference.
The mural, which can be seen at the Riverdale Arts studio in southeast that serves as a primary venue for rotating exhibitions and artist-led events. The mural has been praised by city officials and many Roanoke Valley residents.
“My painting, ‘The Gospel Child,’ is the first fully black and white mural I have produced. The piece portrays my friend in the industrial cathedral. Her roots in the community – both spiritually and as a mentor for so many young women in Roanoke – were the inspiration,” Murrill wrote on Facebook.
He added, “Tiphany leads groups of middle school girls in after-school programs. She is also the director and founder of a youth community choir. Fun fact: Her father is a gospel singer who tours the country with ‘The Spiritual Seven.’ We would all be better off if more people stepped up to serve their community like Tiphany.”
A Star City native, Helm grew up right off 10th Street. As she explained, “My childhood was full of great memories – from family get-togethers to sleepovers with friends.”
After high school, she attended Virginia Western Community College, earning an Associate of Science Degree in Business Administration & Management. She furthered her education at Liberty University. Family members and friends were there to celebrate when she earned a Business Administration & Management Degree.
When one’s intentions are grounded in truth, that alignment allows them to navigate life with clarity. Part of what makes Helm a remarkable leader is how she treats people.
“I am passionate about youth, community and servanthood. I enjoy meeting new people and making connections,” she said. “I take great pride in offering safe spaces for youth to come and express themselves, while building peer connection and community.”
Helm still can’t believe that there is a mural of her. Praising the project for its attention to detail, she said, “I met Jon as a fan of his amazing work around the city. As I got to know him, it became clear that he’s doing exactly what he was called to do. His vision and keen eye of seeing beyond what we all see is amazing. He took my story and laid it out on a building. His expression of art literally takes your breath away.”
