Who is Tracey Saunders and how would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you?
I am a visionary creative with a heart for people, purpose and transformation. I’m someone who believes in evolving through every season of life and using my gifts to inspire others to do the same. Be it through fashion, interior design, hospitality leadership or entrepreneurship. I lead with passion, resilience, authenticity and creativity. I’m also deeply grounded in faith and building meaningful connections with people.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born and raised in Roanoke. This place holds a special place in my heart. My upbringing taught me the importance of hard work, family, faith and determination. Growing up, creativity was always part of who I was. I loved creating beautiful things from an early age. Life wasn’t always easy, but those experiences shaped my strength and ability to adapt, while still dreaming big.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
I entered the workforce and began building experience across several industries, including television, hospitality and banking. While working professionally, I continued nurturing my passion for design and entrepreneurship. Over the years, I developed other skills in leadership, operations, customer service and creative direction. Eventually, those experiences helped lead me toward launching my own brands and stepping fully into my purpose as a designer, entrepreneur and creative visionary.
What is your official title, and what do your responsibilities consist of?
Professionally, I serve as an Area Director where I oversee sales strategies, revenue growth, client relationships, market development and business partnerships in the Richmond market. My responsibilities include building corporate relationships, prospecting new accounts, leading sales initiatives and developing strategic plans to increase revenue performance.
I am also the founder and creative force behind Ash & Fe’nix Design Group, where I specialize in interior design, fashion design, branding, event styling and creative direction. My role combines business leadership with artistic vision.
How important is family to you?
Family means everything to me! They are my foundation, my motivation and my support system. I’m especially proud to be a mother to two sons who are 31 and 26, respectively. I value the lessons, love and strength my parents poured into me throughout my life.
Losing both a few years ago was one of the hardest experiences I’ve ever faced. It has also reminded me to cherish relationships, legacy and the importance of continuing to make them proud through the life I live and the dreams I pursue.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
My playlist would be a mix of R&B, old school classics and hip hop. Artists like Wu Tang, H.E.R, Sade, Chris Brown, Jill Scott, Mary J. Blige, Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye and Leela James would certainly be on it. I love music that tells stories and uplifts the spirit.
What are some of your favorite City of Roanoke memories?
These memories revolve around community, culture, family, and creativity. Returning to participate as a first-time designer in Roanoke Fashion Week was truly a full-circle moment for me. It reminded me that dreams planted in childhood can still bloom later in life. I also cherish memories of neighborhood friendships, local events, family gatherings, Lakeside Amusement Park, Texas Tavern, First Baptist Church, Mill Mountain Star and simply growing up in a city that helped shape my identity and resilience.
What are some of your hobbies?
I love fashion design, interior decorating, sewing, traveling, event styling, creating custom pieces and exploring new creative ideas. I also enjoy attending cultural festivals and finding inspiration through art, fabrics, and design spaces.
Creativity is truly part of my everyday life. Whether I’m designing a room, sketching fashion concepts, creating content or planning an event, I’m happiest when I’m building something beautiful and meaningful.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of family?
I’ve been inspired by mentors, leaders, creatives and people who saw potential in me before I fully saw it in myself. Individuals who challenged me to grow professionally, think bigger, and step outside of my comfort zone have had a major impact on my life.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
I would tell her: “Do not be afraid to take up space, trust your gifts sooner and stop doubting your purpose. Every setback is preparing you for something greater. Protect your peace, stay consistent, keep learning, and never allow fear to delay your dreams. Your creativity is not random – it’s part of your calling.”
