Who is Stephanie Hernandez, and how would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you?
I’m very passionate about living a happy life! I love to laugh and make people laugh with me. I am always down to making new friends and find it easy to relate to people from all walks of life. I’m emotional and proud of it. I am extremely loyal and driven to work hard for those I love.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and moved to Salem after first grade. My childhood was very comfortable, and I had great experiences in school. My parents have always been very hard workers, and I owe them credit for helping me to understand the value of a work ethic. My siblings and I got along well.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
I had my older son about a month before graduating, so I dove right into being a parent. I was fortunate to have the support of my family and in-laws in navigating the experience of having a child so young. I tried college for a year, but struggled to balance my time, and I never went on to earn a degree. I’ll admit it was a bit chaotic for a few years, but my husband and I created a strong foundation for a very happy little family.
What is your official title, and what do your responsibilities consist of?
I am the Assistant General Manager for Olde Salem Brewing Company. My self-appointed title is the “Mad Hatter.” My range of responsibilities are broad. I assist in keeping the business running smoothly in any way I can. I am most proud of having trained almost every bartender in each building. I put a great deal of effort into the culture of our workplace and enjoy the opportunity to create a place where people like to work and hang out.
How important is family to you?
At this point, family is everything to me! I’m blessed with a job that has lots of flexibility around scheduling. If I am not at work, I’m usually hanging out with my kids. I live within ten minutes of my parents and grandparents, so I get to see them frequently.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
Incubus has always been a favorite of mine. My Chemical Romance, Muse, Linkin Park, Parkway Drive and Evanescence are go-to’s, as well. I like a good mix of nostalgic tunes.
What are some of your favorite City of Roanoke memories?
Working Saint Patrick’s Day has been an adventure every year. I’ve worked downtown for almost four years now while meeting some incredible people. I love watching people who have never been here fall in love with this awesome city.
What are some of your hobbies?
I enjoy going to concerts whenever possible. I’ve been cooking since I was a child and absolutely love to be creative in the kitchen. There is something very satisfying about having an idea and being able to turn it into something delicious for people. I’ve recently gotten into throwing darts, which is surprisingly addictive.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of family?
Truthfully, the team I currently work with has changed my life drastically. I am surrounded by caring individuals who encourage each other to fully embrace who they are. I sometimes struggle with anxiety but have found a lot of peace forming bonds with my crew.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
Patience will take you farther than rushing everything. Slow down and learn to enjoy the little things that make life beautiful. And please take more pictures of everything and everyone around you!
