“Young Docs in the Lab”
Inside Roberts Gylco Diversity Laboratory innovation in cancer research is happening. This multi-million dollar research lab at VTech is named after research bio-engineer Dr. Monet Roberts. For the past three years she has invited the Young Doctors Project (including chapters from Washington, DC, Roanoke and Brooklyn, NY) to her lab at Virginia’ Tech to participate in a rotation of activities which provided them with a deeper understanding of cancer research on a cellular level. PhD candidates Dr. Shannon Johnson, Samantha Ferrao, Christina Pokhrel, introduced their research as young docs were allowed to do various activities using animal cells.
Dr. Roberts wanted to enrich the young doctors experience this year so she put out a call to other laboratories to participate. The Granata Biomechanics Lab and Vlaisavliejevich Research Lab answered the call!
The Granata Biomechanics Lab studies human movement, injury prevention, athletic performance, rehabilitation psychology and has a 10 camera motion capture system.
Young Doc Darrell Turner was marked with “loadsol” insoles inside his sneakers. The sensors capture the foce time curve of both feet which determine the peak pressure, loading rate and impulse during a variety of activities in various settings.
Vlaisavliejevich Research Lab introduced the young docs to ultrasound as a non-invasive method for the treatment of cancer in human and veterinary patients.
