Hollins University will present the Fisk Jubilee Singers at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28, in DuPont Chapel.
The Fisk Jubilee Singers started performing in 1871 when George L. White, founder and first director of the ensemble, decided to travel with his students and raise money for what was then the Fisk School. The ensemble traveled globally and introduced the world to the spiritual, an African-American genre of music that they transformed into a high art form.
The Singers continue this tradition today, sharing this legacy with audiences throughout the world. Recipient of the National Medal of Arts, the ensemble will sing various arrangements of this rich and unique music.
