Building Black Wealth

Dr. Boyce Watkins’s book How to Make Money Without Working teaches an important lesson about building wealth. Wealth is not only about working hard for money. It is also about learning how money works, investing wisely, and creating things that can make money over time.

The African American community spends more than $2.1 trillion each year. That includes us. This spending power shows that our community has economic strength. However, much of this money leaves our communities instead of being used to build businesses, technology, schools, and investments. According to Dr. Watkins, this must change if Black communities are going to gain greater economic power.

Education is the first step. We need to learn about saving, investing, business, credit, stocks, real estate, and technology. Knowing how money works can help families make better financial choices. Schools and community programs can teach young people these skills early.

Technology also creates new opportunities. Black entrepreneurs can use technology to create businesses, apps, online stores, media companies, and educational programs. Technology can help people reach customers around the world instead of depending only on local customers.

Pan-Africanism teaches us to think beyond one neighborhood or country. People of African descent around the world can work together, share knowledge, support businesses, and invest in one another. Our combined talents and resources can create stronger economic networks.

Aggressive investment does not mean being careless with money. It means being willing to learn, take calculated risks, and invest for the future instead of spending everything today. Investing can include businesses, stocks, real estate, education, and technology.

The Black community already has two important resources: people and money. The challenge is gaining the knowledge to use these resources effectively. If we spend less on short-term wants and put more money into ownership, education, technology, and investments, we can build lasting wealth.

Our goal should not simply be to earn more money. It should be to own more, invest more, teach more, and build more. Economic knowledge can turn our spending power into lasting community power. Melrose City Dr. Boyce Watkins and I are talking about making this happen. Be good to you.
