When Rapsody (Marlanna Evans), a Grammy-winning hip-hop artist, held a release party for her fifth studio album earlier this month at a private venue in Raleigh, North Carolina, Roanoke’s own Macklyn Mosley was among those who attended the celebration.
“What an honor it was to celebrate with Rapsody at her album release party. She is truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever met,” Mosley later wrote on social media. “I am so grateful to have been part of such an experience.”
Rapsody is a name that carries significant weight within the music industry. Throughout her renowned career, the Roc Nation signee has worked with Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, J. Cole, Phonte Coleman and Mac Miller, just to name a few. Artists featured on her latest album, God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, include Amber Navran, George Clinton and Jojo Abot.
Throughout the album, Rapsody touches on a variety of issues that impact millions, ranging from cultural pride to uncolonized spirituality. At first listen, one may notice the project holds true to what has garnered the North Carolina native such a dedicated fanbase over the years.
Several songs were played at the album release party, including the fan favorite “Apple Juice.” On it, Rapsody writes, “Opened heart, kind heart, when light enters a room, it does not ask permission, it simply reveals, some will squint at that kind of brightness, not because it’s cruel, but because it’s clear.”
As the album progressed, she invoked the memory of George Floyd and Nolan Wells on the track “Black Love,” featuring Malice.
“Black love got a hold of me, controlling me, the soul in me, it molded me, it scolded me, what you get now is the grown in me, game sold, not told to me, heartbreak made a cold of me,” the two wrote.
Even Jay-Z, arguably the greatest emcee of all time, has spoken highly of Rapsody. “She is one of the most gifted artists I’ve ever heard. Whenever I reach out, I always let her know just how proud I am,” he stated publicly in 2024.
Mosley and Rapsody have supported each other for years. When Mosley released his debut album “Love + Life” in 2021, it made it to Rapsody’s ears. Last year, while promoting her “Please Don’t Cry” studio album, she shared their text exchange on her Instagram stories.
If Rapsody ever competed in a Verzuz Battle against another female artist, one of her biggest supporters will be rooting for her, along with millions of other fans across the country.
