William Fleming High School and Roanoke City Public Schools (RCPS) are proud to announce Mackenzie “Mack” Lewis as the new Varsity Head Coach of the Girls Basketball program.
A proud Northside High School alumnus, “Coach Mack,” as he is known, has deep roots in the Roanoke Valley basketball community and brings extensive coaching, leadership, and player development experience to the Colonels program. He previously served as Assistant Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Salem High School, where he helped lead the Spartans to VHSL State Runner-Up finishes in 2025 and 2026, along with multiple district and regional championships and a 93-19 record over the past four seasons.
“Mack has dedicated his career to helping young people grow both on and off the court,” said Patti Atkinson, RCPS Director of Athletics. “His experience developing athletes, building strong team cultures, and investing in the success of students makes him an outstanding fit for William Fleming. We are excited to welcome him to the Colonels family and look forward to supporting his vision for the program.”
In addition to his high school coaching experience, Lewis is the founder and executive director of Hoop Love Academy, a nonprofit basketball development organization that serves more than 400 athletes throughout the Roanoke and New River valleys. Through the academy, he has created a culture-centered development model that emphasizes academics, character, leadership, and mentorship while helping multiple athletes continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level.
He previously served as Head JV Girls Basketball Coach at Patrick Henry High School and has also coached at Northside High School, where he contributed to a state championship program. Throughout his coaching career, he has been recognized for building disciplined, accountable, and competitive team environments focused on long-term player development.
For Lewis, relationships will be at the center of everything the program does moving forward. If strong relationships are built, then everything else will follow. Lewis said his vision for the program extends beyond wins and losses and focuses on preparing student-athletes for success in all aspects of life.
