Who is Charlsie Parker, and how would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you?
Charlsie Parker is a wife, mom of two amazing children, AJ and Amaya, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a librarian who truly loves life. I’m someone who values family, friendships, community, and making meaningful connections with the people around me.
My family is at the heart of who I am. I enjoy spending time with my husband, AJ and Amaya, creating memories, laughing, traveling, and simply enjoying life together. I’m also grateful for the relationships I have with my extended family and friends.
Professionally, I’m proud to be a librarian and to have the opportunity to serve my community. I believe in helping others, being present for people, and making a positive difference wherever I can. At the end of the day, I would describe myself as someone who loves God, loves people, loves my family, and believes life is meant to be enjoyed, shared, and celebrated.
Where were you born and raised, and what was your upbringing like?
Born and raised right here in Roanoke, VA, in Northwest, Wilmont/Signal Hill area, with my parents, Chuck and Stephanie Patrick, and my three little brothers. I grew up surrounded by love, family, and plenty of adventure. Those experiences shaped who I am today and taught me the importance of family, creating memories, and enjoying life to the fullest.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
I attended East Tennessee State University, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication and crossed Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. I later earned my Master’s in Library Science from North Carolina Central University. After graduating, I began my career with Roanoke Public Libraries. I’ve been with the City of Roanoke for almost 17 years, serving as a librarian. In 2023, I was honored to be named one of Roanoke’s 40 Under 40.
What is your official title, and what do your responsibilities consist of?
Senior Manager of Library Operations & Support, I oversee Security, Facilities, and Marketing while also assisting with programming across the libraries. I help ensure our libraries operate safely, efficiently, and effectively while supporting quality programs and services that create a welcoming and positive experience for our community.
How important is family to you?
Family is extremely important to me. They’re my foundation, my biggest support system, and the people I love making memories with. I value quality time, showing up for each other, and creating experiences we’ll look back on and cherish for years to come.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
Thanks to my daughter’s newfound love of MJ, my playlist would have Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Usher, and all the ’90s R&B/Rap classics on repeat!
What are some of your favorite City of Roanoke memories?
Growing up, some of my favorite memories were going to Wilmont Park and watching football at Victory Stadium on Friday nights. I also remember going to Hardee’s with my friends when I was a student at William Fleming High School. These simple moments and the time I spent with friends and family are some of my best memories.
What are some of your hobbies?
I love spending quality time and traveling with my family, whether it’s visiting theme parks, going to concerts, or cheering on our favorite teams at sporting events. Making memories and sharing new experiences together is what I enjoy most.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of family?
Outside of my family, the people who have had the biggest impact on my life are my close friends. They have encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone, learn from my mistakes, and believe in myself. Their advice and support have helped shape who I am and influenced the goals I have for my future.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
YOLO, You Only Live Once! Life is too short not to do the things your heart desires, chase your dreams, and make memories along the way. Don’t spend your time regretting the things you’ve done; instead, learn from every experience, give yourself grace, and keep moving forward. I believe in keeping my faith at the center of my life, trusting God’s plan even when I can’t see the whole picture, and knowing that everything happens in its own time. Life won’t always be perfect, but there is always something to be grateful for and something to smile about. Keep your faith, keep a smile on your face, love deeply, enjoy the journey, and make the most of every moment!
