The City of Roanoke has $6.25 million available to remove lead paint hazards from as many as 150 local homes over the next three years.
The $6.25 million figure combines HUD funding with the City’s required match and does not reflect a single HUD award. The City was awarded $5,750,000 under HUD’s Lead Hazard Reduction (LHR) in FY24. The City’s 10% match of $474,821.37 (which is not HUD funding) brings the total project amount to $6,224,821.37.
Applications for the Lead Safe program are accepted on a rolling basis through an online application available on the City’s website.
To qualify for Lead Safe services, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
Live in the City of Roanoke.
Live in a home built before 1978 that is not located
in a floodplain.
Have a child age 5 or younger who lives in or
regularly visits the home.
Meet income eligibility guidelines.
Lead Safe Roanoke provides professional lead hazard remediation, which may include specialized cleaning, painting, replacement of windows and doors, and repair of damaged walls, floors and other painted surfaces. Lead Safe Roanoke also conducts a full home evaluation to identify other health and safety concerns.
The City has operated its Lead Safe program for more than 20 years, completing lead remediation in 559 Roanoke homes. This is the City’s eighth grant, which was awarded in FY24 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes and it will fund continued lead-safety services to Roanoke families.
Lead exposure can seriously harm children and cause lifelong health effects. Families living in homes built before 1978 may be exposed to lead-based paint hazards without knowing it. Lead Safe Roanoke helps eligible families identify and address these hazards and make their homes safer.
