To be loved and appreciated by the people that you love is one of the best feelings one can experience. Camellia Thompson knew that feeling very well.
One of the first African Americans to graduate from Andrew Lewis High School, Thompson spent her life giving back to a community that gave her so much.
Known for her sharp intellect and warm personality, over a career that lasted decades, she served as a school guidance counselor, mentor, a D.A.R.E. officer and 4-H volunteer, among other roles, throughout the Roanoke Valley.
Parents who got to know Thompson say she was the type of leader who would go above and beyond for students. “She believed deeply that every child possessed the capacity to reach their full potential. For her, the classroom was just part of the story. She was actively involved in the community,” Madison Hairston said.
On Aug. 22, Thompson passed away. She was 72. Within minutes of the news becoming public, people began sharing tributes and stories on social media.
Gerry Shoffner grew up with Thompson. What she remembers most about her dear friend is how she treated everyone, from strangers to colleagues.
“Camellia had a kind spirit and was one of the nicest ladies I know. All the qualities to be an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman. We share that too,” Shoffner said.
“The many house parties, sleigh riding, riding bikes, playing ball are all memories that I will forever cherish.”
“We came to know Camellia by way of the Missionary District Bible School Convention of Southwest Virginia. She was a very kindhearted person, and we worked well together helping each other with our duties,” Juanita Suggs said.
She added, “We had a great time at our 50th year high school class reunion.
There is peace there beyond the wall. There is no pain there beyond the wall. There is rest there beyond the wall. So, rest now, my dear sister.”
There are many ways that one can become a cherished member of the community. In a separate social media post, Trequita Trials explained why Thompson was such an individual.
“I first met Mrs. Camellia when she was serving as a D.A.R.E. Officer with Roanoke County. Years later, I saw her at Shiloh. She was just as sweet and caring as she was when I first met her. I will truly miss her presence,” she said.
A public viewing was held on Sept. 9 at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home & Crematory from 1 to 5 p.m. According to the obituary, the family received friends an hour prior to service and interment was held at Sherwood Memorial Park.
