Banning the media outlets, CNN, MS, and Politico from the White House by President Trump has revealed his extreme belief to control the American system with intention to subjugate the press. President Trump’s reason for banning the media outlets as he stated, “Because they’re fake news.” But his rigid mindset and his rejection of criticism by the press and media has been known by the public as he often responds to the questions with harsh language and goes further to insult the reporters.
Although CNN, MS NOW, and Politico are often in feud with President Trump, they operate and exercise their rights under the Constitution’s First Amendment, which is the freedom of speech and press. However, the federal judge blocked Trump’s ban on these media outlets and ordered the Trump administration to restore their rights and access to the White House.
The President’s order banning the press from the White House was not only a message to those specific media outlets, it was indeed a message and it could be interpreted as a threat to the free press in general. Obviously, the other news media realized such a threat as in a statement, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox News, and NBC News wrote, ”The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”
This was not the first time that the Trump administration violated the Constitution and attempted to infringe on the free press. In 2025, Trump banned the Associated Press (AP) reporters from entering the oval office and attending presidential events as they refused to call “Gulf of Mexico” with its new name that was changed by Trump to “Gulf of America.”
The public should not tolerate banning the freedom of speech and press, as it is a threat to the First Amendment. The media outlets and the press, regardless of their political affiliations, are not working for the president’s pleasure. The hypocrisy of the Trump administration can be seen in its conspicuous violations of the Constitution, despite its claims to support it.
In 1860, the American activist and abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, in his famous address, “A Plea for Freedom of Speech in Boston” stated that, “To suppress free speech is a double wrong. It violates the rights of the hearer as well as those of the speaker.”
However, President Trump will indeed continue defying the Constitution and attempting to implement his policy that serves his political interests. The American people are standing in the middle of two-way roads and only one way can be taken, either support the President in his executive order or embrace the First Amendment as the protection of the freedom of speech.
