The Roanoke NAACP Youth Council will present its “3rd Annual Impactors of Excellence Awards” program on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at 4:00 PM at Sweet Union Baptist Church.
The youth are extremely excited about recognizing and honoring these individuals in the Roanoke Valley who have made a positive impact in their lives and are continuing with today’s youth.
This year’s Impactors are: Rev. M. Sylvia Ball – Pastor of Sweet Union Baptist Church. As the first female to pastor a Baptist church in Roanoke, VA, she serves as a leader, teacher and a role model for young women. In addition, she is birthing ministries that edify children and young adults in the church and community.
Carlton Bell (not pictured) – former principal of Hurt Park Elementary, a Roanoke City School Student Services Specialist and an NAACP ACT-SO program chair who goes above and beyond to help youth succeed.
Brenda Hale – president, Roanoke Branch NAACP, always making the Youth Council, ACT-SO and this community a priority.
Roland Lovelace – Former William Fleming High School championship girls & boys basketball, girls track coach and history teacher, who is one of the highest tenured and highly respected personnel in RCPS. He currently serves as an assistant principal at WFHS.
Rev. William “Bill” Lee – Loudon Avenue Christian Church Pastor of 38 years; 2011 Citizen of the Year, and community activist and founder of New Horizon Health Care Center in Roanoke.
Carla Lewis – retired city librarian who made her presence at the Gainsboro Library for 36 years mentoring and influencing youth, making her name synonymous to the library.
Gloria Manns – former RCPS School Board member, Licensed Social Worker and owner of Manns Counseling Service, who volunteers with the Delta’s EMBODI program for males at Woodrow Wilson Middle School.
Rachel Wheaton – retired Patrick Henry high school Dean who initiated the Delta GEMS at Patrick Henry’s Day program, co-founded the STEP program and continues to serve as RCPS consultant; and
Jeffrey Williams – Math teacher at Lucy Addison Middle School & director of the William Fleming and Patrick Henry High Schools Gospel Chorus as well as the Addison Praise Dance Team.
This exciting program will feature the NAACP youth members; the William Fleming/Patrick Henry Gospel Chorus; local praise dance teams and an inspiring “surprise” presentation.
There will be a “free will” offering with donations from those who cannot attend. All proceeds will benefit the Roanoke NAACP Youth Council as funds are needed to attend the 106th Annual NAACP National Convention in Cincinnati, OH, as well as other training meetings. Please plan to attend.
