Big Sister and Roanoke City Police Officer, Jasmine Hariston, will rappel from the roof of the Patrick Henry building during Big Brothers Big Sisters’ annual event, Over The Edge. Jasmine and her little Danazija have been matched for 1-year through Big Brothers Big Sisters. They enjoy spending time together and have developed a great relationship over the past year. By participating in the event and rappelling 11 stories from the roof of the Patrick Henry, Jasmine hopes to show Danazija that you can overcome any obstacle to meet a goal.
The Roanoke City Police Department has aligned with Big Brothers Big Sisters through the Homework Helpers program. Officers visit the Oliver Hill Mentoring Program and help Littles with homework, play basketball and read with them. The participants in the program are highly impacted by the visibility of the officers and the time that they give to the program that allows the Littles to have additional positive adult role models.
To go “Over The Edge,” participants raise $1000 for the incredible opportunity to rappel 132 feet from the roof of The Patrick Henry. In the past 2 years, BBBS has raised more than $176,000 for mentoring programs in Roanoke, Salem, Montgomery County and Pulaski County. This opportunity to go “Over The Edge” is available for anyone 100 lbs. – 300 lbs. in weight with the maturity to decide to participate, a little courage and the desire to raise $1,000 to step “Over The Edge” for children facing adversity in our community. Space is limited; there are only 85 rappel spots and BBBS anticipates a wait list. Registration is now open at www.bigslittles.org/OTE.
BBBS believes in the inherent potential in every child. Many of the children BBBS serves live in poverty, most come from single-parent homes, and many have one or both parents incarcerated. When a Little is matched with a volunteer Big, they create a new friendship, inspire new and improved outlooks on life, and have a great time together.
