Ms. Josie Daniels is the first recipient of the “Turnaround Teacher Award established by the Northside Middle School Student Assistance Program Core Team, co-sponsored by the PTA. The Award was designed to recognize and award teachers who exemplify and incorporate three factors of resiliency in their teaching experience: Caring and Support, Positive and High Expectations and Opportunities to Participate and Contribute.
When these factors are incorporated into the teaching and learning processes, students at all levels are challenged to perform at their very best and come to believe that they can. Students at Northside Middle School were invited to nominate teachers they felt met the criteria for being a Turnaround Teacher. Out of 31 teachers nominated, Ms. Daniel, who teaches English, received the highest number of nominations.
In support of their nominations, students were asked to comment as to the Turnaround Teacher traits of their nominee. Some comments about Ms. Daniels include: “She is really nice and gives good advice.” “She spends more time with kids who need extra help!”
“Ms. Daniels always listens to what you have to say without cutting you off. She always thoroughly answers your questions and makes sure that you have a clear understanding.”
Ms. Daniels received her Bachelor and Master degrees from Radford University in Criminal Justice and did course work for Virginia Teacher Licensure Renewal Continuing Education at the University of Virginia. Her professional career includes serving as counselor at Family Preservation Services, a teacher at Stonewall Jackson Middle School and Minnick Education Center. She has also been an English Teacher at Northside Middle School since 2011. The Administration and staff at Northside Middle can attest to Ms. Daniels’ enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to helping students succeed academically and as persons of good character.
