Deltas Bring Uganda to Roanoke
Yes, there are disparities in the care of children with disabilities everywhere and the Roanoke Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. wants to share with the community the reason why we should care. The International Awareness Committee is sponsoring a free Lecture entitled, “The Global Politics of Children with Disabilities: Why We Should Care” from 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 23 at the Harrison Museum of African American Culture, located at 25 Campbell Ave. in Downtown Roanoke.
The presenter will be Dr. Deneen Evans, who recently visited Uganda in an effort to continue her studies on the treatment of children with disabilities in the world. Dr. Evans has a Ph.D. in Social Work from Norfolk State University with a Masters degree in Social Work from Radford University where she is an assistant professor.
As 2nd vice president of the Roanoke Alumnae Chapter and outgoing chair of the Physical and Mental Health Committee, Dr. Evans has been concerned with major health issues, especially those related to cerebral palsy. She has personal experience in this area and her visit to Uganda will allow her to share additional experiences related to her doctoral research with the Roanoke community.
Cheryl Gray, committee chair, is excited about the work the Deltas have completed with building a well in Africa and her committee wants to increase awareness of other needs.
Please save the date and plan to come out and experience Uganda with the Ugandan music and food. This is a free event; however, donations may be accepted to support a children’s charity in Uganda. Seating is limited, so please contact the Harrison Museum at 540 857-4395 to reserve your space. Monica Callaway is the chapter president.
