The National Chapter Continental Societies, Inc. held its Diamond Anniversary Conclave at the Hotel Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, NV, June 22-26. Continental Donna Lee, local chapter president, served as delegate and Continental Linda Journiette was alternate delegate. The President’s Reception was held on Thursday evening at Caesar’s Palace.

The workshops, Plenary Sessions and activities were well planned and well attended.  The main task for the delegates was to amend the National Constitution and By-Laws.  In addition, with exciting activities were planned for the Continentals with the Continental Guys also in attendance.

On Saturday morning, three charter buses carried attendees to the St. Jude’s Ranch in Boulder City near Las Vegas, to bring the spirit of Christmas to the children who stayed at the ranch for abused, abandoned and neglected children. Attired in their 60th Anniversary T-shirts and Santa hats, the continentals were geared up to create Christmas items and decorations for the children and families at St. Jude’s Ranch. This public service project was named in memory of Past National President, Dee Evelyn Matthews, who passed away on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016.  The Continentals donated 3,066 items of clothing (shoes, socks and underwear) and a monetary donation of $6, 411.00 totaling $14, 534.00 for the children at St. Jude’s Ranch.

Highlights of the Conclave included the Honorary Member Induction of Ms. Ingrid Saunders, chair of the National Council of Negro Women, into the sisterhood of Continental Societies, Inc.  Another event, the Legends Ball, was held Saturday, June 25 with Honorary Co-Chairs, Rich Lawson and Mrs. Tina Knowles-Lawson, mother of famous Beyonce Knowles Carter.   This ball is held to honor our legendary charter members who left a rich legacy and paved the way to improve the quality of life for children and youth in the communities in which Continentals serve.

On Sunday, June 26, 2016, the Closing Ceremony, Worship Service and Farewell Brunch were held for this memorable, exciting and productive event.  Next year, the National Conclave will be held in Hampton, VA another outstanding celebration of 61 years of a sisterhood embracing our theme, “Our Children, Our Commitment, Our Concern.”

The Continental Societies, Inc. is a Non-Profit 501 (c)(3) organization of mostly African-American women who are focused solely on the welfare of children and youth.  There are 42 chapters in the United States and Bermuda. Throughout their history, the Continentals have cultivated innovative programs for children and youth. National President Edna Lee Moffitt and the National Executive Board were very instrumental in all aspects of this successful Conclave held in Las Vegas.
