Members of the Star City Youth Coalition tried to attend Trump’s Roanoke Town Hall. Since they wouldn’t allow them to carry signs or banners into the town hall, they printed messages on their bodies and clothes to protest Trump’s bullying rhetoric.
Some members of the coalition decided not to attend the town hall, said Isaac, “I felt far too unsafe to enter the event myself, considering the sheer amount of desperate, blind rage emanating from the building; as a person who appears highly characteristic of what the trump campaign considers “Muslim”, I do not find myself having the desire to be a political martyr.”
Co-Leader Hannah Gibson expressed, “We are outraged at the deterioration of compassion and honest discussion that has ensured because of this election. We are fighting to protect these values in our community through passive resistance to hate.”
Julia Shockley, Co-Leader, said, “ When it gets to the point that you’re worrying about your friends lives on a day to day basis just because their skin tone is darker or their faith is different, that is when it’s time to stand up. We can no longer stand silent while the concept of humanity is being destroyed.”
The Star City Youth Coalition mission is to protect and empower all people of Roanoke. Today’s youth knows that not everyone is treated equally. We stand in solidarity with everyone who stands up for civil rights.
