In June, children from all over the area drew their best turkeys at the Taubman Museum of Art’s Sidewalk Art show, with the hope of having their drawing selected as the new logo for the 2016 Drumstick DASH t-shirt. This year, the Rescue Mission collected 59 drawings – only one will be picked as the prized turkey that will adorn this year’s t-shirt.
New this year, all entries will be featured at 2nd Helpings Gallery for the entire month of August. On August 20, the public is invited to a special reception to vote for their favorite drawing from among the top 10 finalists. The winner will be announced at the end of the reception and have their picture taken with the DASH mascot.
“The Drumstick DASH is an event that brings our community together for the good of others – the t-shirt design contest is a fun way to get the younger members involved,” says Drumstick DASH Race Director Uneita Mathews.
This years marks 11th annual Drumstick DASH. The popular Thanksgiving Day 5K has grown to be the largest race in Roanoke. Participants can register now for this year’s event at drumstickdash.net. Last year, about 13,000 runners and walkers raced around Downtown Roanoke and raised more than $251,000 for the Rescue Mission. “We are en tering a new decade of moving our feet so others can eat,” says Mathews. “We hope the DASH will continue to grow to help support the Rescue Mission.”
The drawings will be on display at 2nd Helpings Gallery starting August 1. The reception and voting will be from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, August 20 with 2nd Helpings Café providing complimentary refreshments.
