The Muscular Dystrophy Association is bringing strength to life for kids and adults in the Roanoke Valley and SW & Central VA living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases.
The 2016 MDA Muscle Walk of Roanoke will be on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 15, at Roanoke College! The annual event will raise critical awareness and dollars to help MDA fund groundbreaking research across diseases and empower its families with services and support from day one to help them live longer and grow stronger.
MDA Muscle Walk is a meaningful way for families, friends, neighbors and local businesses in SW & Central VA to come together and show support for area MDA families. This year’s walk includes 1K and 3K options designed for participants of all ages and abilities, including a wheelchair and equipment-friendly course.
This annual event is scheduled from 1-3 pm with registration at 12 noon on Saturday, Oct. 15. This is the first year the local MDA Muscle Walk will take place at the C. Homer Bast Track at Roanoke College in Salem. In addition to the walk, there will be vendor tables, games, music and door prizes. This is a family friendly event that helps save the lives of local MDA families!
To register, call the local MDA staff person at 312-848-0005, or the Greater VA office at 804-285-2961.
“There are kids and adults here in our community living with muscular dystrophy and related diseases that take away everyday abilities like walking, hugging and even breathing,” said MDA Area Director Diane Boardman. “But by supporting the MDA Muscle Walk of SW & Central VA, you can help provide strength and turn hope into action for families who are counting on us to find treatments and cures.”
MDA greatly appreciates the support of our local muscle walk sponsors: Trustcare Home Medical Equipment, Carilion Clinic, Appalachian Power Company, K92-FM Wheeler Broadcasting, Daytime Blue Ridge/WSLS TV, Bath Fitter, NuMotion, Sanofi Genzyme, and Pride Mobility.
Last year, dedicated participants raised $8.2-million through Muscle Walk for MDA and more than $34-million has been raised since Muscle Walk began in 2011. The Roanoke walk has raised well over $150,000 for more than 1,200 local MDA client families.
Contributions help support MDA’s nationwide network of state-of-the-art support groups and clinics, including three MDA Care Centers at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke. They also make MDA summer camp possible where kids can experience the best week of the year at no cost to their families at the Airfield 4-H Center in Wakefield, VA.
About MDA
MDA is leading the fight to free individuals — and the families who love them — from the harm of muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases that take away physical strength, independence and life. We use our collective strength to help kids and adults live longer and grow stronger by finding research breakthroughs across diseases; caring for individuals from day one; and empowering families with services and support in hometowns across America.
