Recently, the 2016 Roanoke NAACP ACT-SO gold medal winners and chaperones traveled to Cincinnati, OH for an exciting experience as they competed in the National ACT-SO competition. Although the three 2016 Olympians-Monica Hackett, LaRon Glenn and NeKeah Stokes were not national winners, they produced excellent entries in the areas of photography, painting and drawing respectively and the experience was awesome.
On the final Saturday, Yara Shahidi from the ABC’s show, Blackish, took the stage at a workshop sponsored by the Walt Disney Company to talk to more than 400 participants about overcoming obstacles and accomplishing their dreams. Roanoke Olympians LaRon Glenn and NeKeah Stokes were captured on film while sharing their experiences with the speakers. (This picture was placed on the NAACP Facebook page). Notification came later from Katie Seelig, Client Relations for Blue Goji, that Olympian Monica Hackett was a top contender in her category and was the winner of a Goji Play game system.
The committee is getting geared up for the 2017 ACT-SO competition in order to produce more national winners, especially the Culinary Arts competitors. The prizes are extremely great for a high school student who excels in the areas of Sciences, Filmmaking, Poetry, Drama, Performing (Vocal, Dance, etc.) & Visual Arts (Painting, Photography, etc.), Business, and Culinary Arts.
