The Roanoke Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. held its Fifth Annual Doggy Fashion Show on Sunday, Sept. 11 at the Ramada Inn on Franklin Road. Traditionally, the Doggy Fashion Show is always held on National Pet Memorial Day.
This year’s event, “Dogs Cause,” was dedicated to the Founder of Saint Francis Service Dogs, Carol Willoughby. Delta President Monica Callaway presented the $1,000.00 check to Event Coordinator, Beth Fulp. A Plaque was presented to Carol’s husband, Doug Willoughby, in recognition of their infinite love of the Saint Francis Service Dogs Project.
Miss Jabberwock 2016, Erica Anderson, introduced the show’s dynamic commentator, Neesy Payne of WDBJ-7. One of the most powerful presentations was the dance to Bridge Over Troubled Water choreographed by Liza Deck and performed by The City Modern Ensemble, a division of Roanoke Valley Theatre. The dancers were Andrew Caudill and Renae Dower. This performance included Mair Rubin, Angie Leonard and son, Joshua Leonard along with their Service Dogs.
Other program talent included a poem, by sorority sister, Peggy Sue Mason and solo by 2016 Jabberwock Contestant, Leila Bryant and by sister Dorothy Johnson. The North Cross School Dancers were outstanding as they performed “Waving Flag” in colorful dress and precision.
Ten precious dogs paraded in high fashions this year for “Dog Days of Summer,” “Tailgate Party,” Rainy Dog Days, ”Sunday Best,” “Halloween” and the “Wedding Finale.”
Laurice Hampton is creator of the Doggy Fashion Show Project and Monica Callaway is chapter president.
