The Family Strengthening Committee of Beta Chi Omega Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® implemented a healthy living activity at Hurt Park Community Center on Saturday, June 30. Neighborhood children and their parents were invited to come learn how to make wise choices to maintain healthy lifestyles.
Guest speakers were Virginia Cooperative Extension program assistants; Marguerita Cubas and Lamoryae Mayo with each offering interactive and informative presentations. The participants made snacks from fruit and other low sugar and lowfat options. Attendees also went outside to play a variety of active games including jump rope and hula hoop.
Lunch was provided by Feeding America Southwest Virginia’s Cafe to Grow children’s food truck. The Committee has also previously volunteered with Café to Grow.
The activity was planned by Mollie DeBerry; Clarissa Nash is Family Strengthening Committee chair and Pam Edwards is president of the local AKA chapter.
