WASHINGTON, DC – Statement from American Federation of Teachers Secretary-Treasurer Lorretta Johnson on the passing of civil and women’s rights icon Rev. Willie Barrow
“Today, the AFT mourns the loss of the ‘little warrior’ and civil rights icon Rev. Willie T. Barrow. Rev. Barrow, who broke barriers as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and as a founding leader of the Rainbow/Push Coalition, was a courageous and staunch advocate for civil rights, economic equality and a fair democracy for all.
“While little in stature, her gutsy demeanor and unyielding fight for labor, LGBT and women’s right made her a giant. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, her legacy can be a moral compass to provide direction in our fight forward for a society where every American has a fair shot. Sincerest condolences to her family and friends, and to everyone whose lives she touched.”
