Roanoke Chapter Continental Societies, Inc. members were proud to initiate two new members, Sheila Herron and Nicole Ross, into the sisterhood on Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Gainsboro Library. Both ladies were 2018 honorees of the “Queens of Africa” Black Girls Really Rock Program.
Sheila Herron, praise ministry leader at New Covenant Living Church and a co-founder of “Be That Girl,” an after school program at William Fleming High School. Nicole Ross, an ordained evangelist who serves as Administrative Assistant at New Life Christian Fellowship, serves also as Goodwill Industries’ Regional Coordinator of Youth Services.
Their community project entitled “Get Woke and Informed” was held on Tuesday, Feb. 12, for the “Be
That Girl” after school program. Sheila spoke about the health issues involving “Diabetes” and Nicole shared her experiences with “Sickle Cell Anemia,” (including a video about the disease) and of having three sons, one who passed away due to that dreaded disease.
The initiation was a festive luncheon hosted by Continental Birdie Edwards.
The Roanoke Continentals have been serving the Roanoke Valley since 1956, impacting the community by providing community service for children and youth with scholarships awarded to deserving high school seniors. An Endowed Scholarship Fund at Virginia Western Community College also awards a scholarship to a student at Virginia Western.
Plans are also currently underway for the 8th Annual “Black Girls Really Rock “program to be held at 3:00 Sunday, March 31, at William Fleming High School with this year’s theme “Sunday’s Best, Hats off to Roanoke’s Finest.”
