Members of the Beta Chi Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. delivered backpacks filled with school supplies to Hurt Park and Lincoln Terrace Elementary Schools Monday, March 23.
The backpacks were filled with more than 300 items collected by chapter members as part of its Founders’ Day observance on March 14. The activity was tied to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s national and international goal of donating and distributing 1-million filled backpacks over the next four years.
This effort called “AKA One Million Backpacks” is one component of its international program’s Target I: “Educational Enrichment.” Through donations of backpacks, The Beta Chi Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered in Roanoke in 1938. Through its 77 years in the Roanoke area, the chapter has carried out numerous service projects. One of its signature programs is the awarding of thousands of dollars in scholarships through the years.
The Founders’ Day backpack observance and activity was chaired by Delois Broady; Carla Shepherd, program chairman/vice president; and Pam Edwards, chapter president.
