Not everyone understands the importance of strengthening and supporting others and how critical it is to the development of not only children but people of any age. Then there are those like Peggy Sue Mason, a celebrated educator who not only understands such a dynamic but continues to be empowered through her efforts to teach and encourage others.
A group of family and friends gathered Saturday, January 10 at Hotel Roanoke’s Regency Room to have lunch in celebration of this special lady on her 80th birthday.
Roanoke City Councilwoman Anita Price referred to the honoree as “a consummate educator” during her remarks that led to the presentation of a proclamation from the City officially declaring Monday, Jan. 12, 2015 “Peggy Sue Mason Day in the Roanoke Valley.”
Among the 35 guests gathered in her honor were the honoree’s two daughters Tina and Kelly Mason who couldn’t be more proud of their mother as accolades flowed freely among the invited guests.
As an educator, Peggy Sue (as she is most affectionately and respectfully referred to) retired after 42 years of service as a special education teacher with Roanoke City Public Schools. Additionally she taught in Martinsville, San Antonio, TX, Tokyo, Japan and Frankfurt, Germany. She was recently recognized for 45 years of service with the 4-H and 31 years working with the Special Olympics Program.
Many know her as a faithful member of High Street Baptist Church for over 60 years where she also taught Sunday School. Councilwoman Price speaking proudly as a friend and fellow church member said, “I’ve had the privilege of not only my daughters but my granddaughters have also been students in Mrs. Mason’s classes at High Street.”
As part of the birthday festivities everyone filled out a questionnaire with the premise “what Peggy Sue means to me.” Through another twist to the celebration, attendees themselves were pleasantly surprised as party organizers passed out gifts to everyone.
In reflecting over her many years as a teacher and her continued service as a volunteer on several levels, Peggy Sue emphasizes, “I’ve been so blessed because I’ve always really loved my job.”
The entire affair was a grand celebration with all the right elements topped off with an official proclamation from the City that made this a most memorable birthday for Peggy Sue Mason, a very special lady who’s meant so much to so many for so long.
