Two $1000.00 awards are given annually to qualifying local area high school students by Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (The Boule).
In 1995, Beta Phi Boule initiated and has maintained annual academic recognition awards. The purpose is to provide financial support to South West Virginia area, African-American graduating high school seniors who desire advanced education and who have attended one high school for the last two (2) years.
Applicants who demonstrate need will be judged on their academic standing, personal achievement, community involvement, and three (3) letters of recommendation from members of the school administration and/or teachers, and one (1) character reference. Local high school scholarship coordinators will receive official application materials the week of April 6. For a student to be considered, all of the required information must be received by the committee by May 3. Awards will be announced to the recipients on/or before May 18. Recipients will be celebrated with their families during a private organizational dinner meeting on Thursday June 1.

Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity is the oldest Greek-letter fellowship for predominately African American men. The fraternity began in 1904 in Philadelphia, PA and has 108 Subordinate Boules in the US and the Bahamas. The local organization was founded in 1983 and is known as the Roanoke-Lynchburg,Virginia Beta Phi chapter of the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.
