The Alliance for Excellence awarded three scholarships to local students during its 1st Annual Ice Cream Social and Send-Off Party held at the Cultural Arts for Excellence (CAFE) on Saturday, August 13. The recipients are: Kaniqua Young, Lydia Christopher and David Beck, Jr.
Kaniqua Young, a 2018 graduate from Patrick Henry High School, is the daughter of Kia Scott. She will be attending Virginia Western Community College in the Fall of 2018 where she will begin her concentration in Health Sciences. Kaniqua will be transferring to Old Dominion University Fall of 2019 to continue her double major in Science to become a Sport Medicine Trainer and a Mechanical Engineer.
Lydia Christopher, a 2018 honor graduate from William Fleming High School is the daughter of Andria Whorley-Lipscomb. She will be attending Virginia Western Community College in the fall where she will be pursuing a science degree.
Kaniqua and Lydia submitted award-winning essays and received $500 book scholarships for use at Virginia Western.
David Beck, Jr., son of David Beck, Sr. and Adalina Allicott, is recipient of the Alliance for Excellence’s CAFE Kids Tuition Scholarship.
CAFE Kids is an after school program grounded in the arts, including dance, theater, musical instruments, and the visual arts. The center uses the arts as a primary focus for academic remediation. It employs SOL-aligned activities for learning; it endeavors to increase self-confidence and enhance overall life-engagement.
The Alliance for Excellence encourages students to dream big while providing the support and connections to make their dreams a reality. The organization’s mission is to support the enrollment, retention, graduation and job placement of African American students and garners success through partnerships with local Black churches, civic organizations, and colleges and universities.
