Theta chapter of Virginia Alpha Delta Kappa recently announced it has awarded $1,000 scholarships to three high school seniors planning a career in education. The recipients are: Ryan Albee, Estephanie Cole, and Amara Wingo.
Albee will be attending Virginia Western Community College with plans to later transfer to Radford University. Cole and Wingo will be attending Radford University. All are recent graduates of Patrick Henry High School.
The majority of funds for the scholarships were raised through “A Taste of Paris” held at the Jefferson Center in November. Sponsors for the event included Hollins College, Roanoke College, Asphalt Associates, and Mark Taylor with monies raised through “A Taste of Paris” also applied to the scholarship funds.
For the 2019-20 school year, Theta supported local projects for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), the Rescue Mission Recovery Program, Lincoln Terrace Elementary School, Girls on the Run, Be That Girl, and the Audible Egg Hunt.
Alpha Delta Kappa is an international service sorority composed of female educators or personnel related to education who strive to help meet the needs of the world, both globally and locally, by sponsoring a variety of altruistic projects. On the international level, it has helped to build schools in Viet Nam and Haiti. On the national level, it supports St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Alzheimer research.
Locally, Theta, the Roanoke City chapter, celebrated its 60th anniversary in December and has as its major service project providing scholarships to students, both male and female, who plan careers in any aspect of education. Over the past 11 years, Theta has awarded approximately $12,000 in scholarships to Roanoke City students.
