Two $1000.00 awards will be given to qualifying local area high school students by Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (The Boule), the oldest Greek-letter fellowship for predominately African-American men.
In 1995, Beta Phi Boule initiated and has maintained annual academic recognition awards. The purpose is to provide financial support to South West Virginia area, African-American graduating high school seniors who desire advanced education and who have attended one high school for the last two years.
The fraternity began in 1904 in Philadelphia, PA and has 108 Subordinate Boules in the US and the Bahamas. The local organization was founded in 1983 and is known as the Roanoke-Lynchburg, VA Beta Phi chapter of the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.
Applicants who demonstrate need will be judged on their academic standing, personal achievement, community involvement, and one (1) letter of recommendation from members of the school administration and/or teachers and one (1) personal reference letter.
For a student to be considered, all of the required information must be received by the committee by May 2, 2018. Awards will be announced to the recipients on/or before May 17, 2018. The awards will be celebrated with recipients and their families during a private organizational dinner meeting on Thursday June 7.
