The Roanoke Chapter of Continental Societies, Inc. (RCCSI) presented the 4th annual “Black Girls Rock: Celebrating Roanoke’s Finest” program on Saturday, April 18, in the William Fleming High School auditorium. The program recognized eight area women who have been positive role models and public servants who continue to make an impact within the Roanoke Valley.
Honorees were Katina Casey-Hamlar (Entrepreneur); Cora Carpenter (Community Involvement); Margaret Richardson (Music); Minister Hazel Jones ( Religion); Althea Polk (Education); Brenda Hale (Political); Dorothy Lavender (Philanthropy), and Nannie Green (Business).
In addition, three high school girls who are making a difference in their communities were honored with the 2015 M.A.D. Girls awards. They were: Kenai Hunt (William Fleming HS); Morgan Hancock (Patrick Henry HS) and Malala Penn (Franklin County HS).
Ms. Brie Jackson of WSLS Channel-10 served as an excellent Mistress of Ceremonies as members of the Continentals introduced the honorees and presented each with a beautiful award. The audience was also treated with a dance by the “Daughters of the King” performing to “When Jesus Says Yes.” Sisters, Kai and Kameron Washington-Brown added dance and song respectively to the program.
The RCCSI is a public service organization with a mission: to create environments within our community that will empower children to have access to quality and appropriate opportunities in order to reach their optimal potential and is very appreciative of all the support received from the community. Program chair, Mrs. Quo Vadis Washington-Brown and committee members are to be highly commended for an outstanding job! Gloria Randolph-King is chapter president.
