After careful consideration, local entrepreneur and business owner Mark Lucas announces that he will seek a seat on City Council running as an independent in the May 4 general election.
“I did not arrive at this decision easily,” said Lucas. “But after strong urging from many supporters and citizens, I felt compelled to enter the race.”
Mark Lucas opposed incumbent David Bowers for mayor in the 2012 election where he gained powerful endorsements from the Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors, the Roanoke, Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Business Leadership Fund and The Roanoke Times. He lost his bid by a very small margin of less than 350 votes.
Following the close call, Mark continued to grow his business while operating as a sounding board and investor for prospective entrepreneurs. This ongoing contact with citizens impressed upon Lucas a growing division and tension among those with differing political beliefs.
“I decided I wanted to be a different type of public servant. I believe in people over politics and ideas over ideology. We can achieve far more working collaboratively and bringing people together than we can by clinging obstinately to our every position”
Lucas brings not only a different perspective to City Council but also a unique background. “I feel my business acumen is perfectly suited for the challenges City Council faces. Understanding what attracts businesses, drives growth and creates jobs is paramount to Roanoke’s economic development future. When the economy is strong, there are resources available to better care for our citizens’ needs,” said Lucas. “New and growing businesses will create jobs, increase wages and in turn provide a more prosperous community for all of us.”
