Christiansburg Institute, Inc. (CI, Inc.), together with Linda D. Whitlock-Brown, Edgar A. Long Descendant, is honored to announce the ‘Edgar A. Long Centennial Remembrance’ in tribute to the remarkable legacy of Edgar Allen Long. The event will be held at the Christiansburg Industrial Institute Principals Cemetery in Montgomery County, Virginia, on October 26th, 2024, followed by an indoor reception at The Farmhouse in Christiansburg, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Edgar Allen Long’s contributions and statewide leadership.
Edgar Allen Long, born on October 8, 1871, in Tuskegee, Alabama, was a distinguished alumnus of the Tuskegee Institute, graduating in 1895. By appointment from the esteemed
Booker T. Washington, Long arrived in Montgomery County, Virginia, in 1898 to join the faculty of the Christiansburg Industrial Institute (CII). Starting as a printing instructor and treasurer, he eventually became the principal of CII, a position he held with the utmost dedication until his passing in 1924.
Edgar Allen Long, a member of the first generation of African Americans born free in the United States, rests at the ‘CII Principals Cemetery’ on the historic CII campus.
This meaningful and reflective event is by invitation only and not open to the public. It’s objective, as requested by Whitlock-Brown is to honor her great-grandfather Edgar Allen Long’s legacy and highlight his significant contributions to education and the African-American community.
