Janae Y. Williams, who graduated from Elon University in North Carolina on Saturday, May 19 with a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Mathematics and minors in African & African-American and Jewish Studies. She received the Pi Mu Epsilon Research Award in recognition of her outstanding achievement in the dissemination of mathematic research.
Pi Mu Epsilon is the honorary national mathematics society. Janae presented at the 13th Annual Regional Mathematics and Statistics Conference at UNC-Greensboro in November 2017 and at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research at the University of Central Oklahoma in April 2018. Her presentation was: Counting the p-power Extensions of the p-adic Numbers. She also received a certificate in recognition of her determination and perseverance in Hebrew from the World Language Department at Elon University.
Janae also took part in the Donning of the Kente ceremony. The Kente cloth symbolizes a visual representation of African American history that is materialized in the present day.
In January 2017, Janae traveled to Germany, Poland, Czech Republic and the Netherlands as part of the Holocaust Journey. In January 2018, she traveled to various cities in Ghana and donated supplies to the schools while on tour performing traditional West-African dance. This July she will travel with Passages to the Holy Land, a program that allows Christian college students a fresh and innovative opportunity to experience Israel first-hand.
Janae is a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc and her community service includes tutoring at Positive Attitudes Youth Center and Elon Elementary School where she volunteered as the assistant coach of the step team. She has accepted a math tutoring/mentoring position in the Chicago Public School system that she is excited to begin in August.
Janae is the daughter of Michelle Williams (NY) and the granddaughter of Bishop and Mrs. Richard (Anita Tinsley) Williams of Oxford, NC.
Dr. Jasmine Yvette Jackson on graduating from Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine on Saturday May 19.
As a student at Liberty, Jasmine participated in Long Term Memory Research for 2 years, passing all of her COMLEX board exams. She will begin her residency as a physician on July 1 at Sovah Health-Danville, Danville, VA.
She is the daughter of Yvette L. and Jeno A. Jackson and granddaughter of Ernestine P. and James W. Law of Roanoke, and Shirley A. (and the late James A. Jackson, Sr.) of Salem, VA.
