The Roanoke Chapter Continental Societies, Inc. will present its seventh annual fundraiser “Black Girls Really Rock” featuring “Queens of Africa” on Saturday, March 17, 2018 in the William Fleming High School Auditorium at 5:00 p.m. This scholarship fundraiser is designed to celebrate the accomplishments of African-American females in the Roanoke Valley. The criteria for this honor includes: being a role model; has accomplishments that positively affect the community; has a visible presence in positive venues and is involved in at least one public service organization.
Categories/Contestants:
Education: Tami Anderson Amos, worked for Roanoke City Public Schools as teacher, Intervention Specialist and Building Administrator, second year PhD student at Virginia Tech University and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Marketing Manager: Cynthia Dianne Coles, U.S. Postal Service Marketing Manager for the Appalachian District which covers Southwest Virginia and the state of West Virginia, is a member of Beta Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Omnia Bona Club, Inc.; Student Services: Sheila M. Herron, Student Support Specialist at William Fleming High School, co-founder of “Be That Girl,” mentor for Fleming’s “Help Save the Next Girl,” is also Adult Chair-NAACP, ACTSO Co-Chair/ recruiter and mentor; Social Worker: Gloria Polk Manns, Creator of Manns Counseling Services, partner with Hope Support Services as Licensed Mental Health Provider, member of the Roanoke Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and member of the Altruist Club; Nursing: Linda G. Manns, registered nurse for 47 service years with 32 years at the Salem Veterans Administration Medical Center, member of New Horizons Healthcare Board of Directors; News Reporter: Neesey Payne, bright, bubbly personality on WDBJ7 Mornin’ show and a graduate of Radford University where she received her BS degree in Media Studies in 2010; Religion: Evangelist Nicole Ross, licensed and ordained Evangelist with New Life Christian Fellowship, currently enrolled in the Bethlehem Bible College in Roanoke; Musician: Anita Duckett Wilson, member of Sweet Union Baptist Church where she is directress and pianist for the E. T. Burton Choir, directress and pianist of the Golden Chorale Choir and is a member of Beta Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
“M.A.D.D. (Making A Distinct Difference) Girls” include: Tianna Horace, William Fleming High School 2018 Valedictorian with a stellar 4.5 GPA; Majesty Jones, 2017 Altruist Club Debutante Queen; Kameron Washington-Brown, member of Continental Angels Girls Club, Fleming’s Indoor and Outdoor Track Team and the NAACP Youth Council; Yebelee Willis- Desta, former member of the Continental Angels Club a senior at Patrick Henry High School who desires to become a nurse practitioner and run a facility for the homeless and victims of domestic violence.
The event will be hosted by Bianca Holman, WDBJ7 News Reporter. Ticket prices are $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for children under 12 years of age. Entertainment will be provided by January Hairston, UPraize Music Lab Gospel Band -Bernadette Brown-Educator and God’s House Baptist Ministry Praise Dancers.
