The Roanoke Chapter Continental Societies, Inc. culminated its “Let’s Move” (an initiative of First Lady Michelle Obama “Steps Challenge” program) on Wednesday, April 27, at the Noah-Christian Academy. The Awards Program was held to recognize student achievements in their steps challenge.
The kick-off for this health program was held October 20, 2015. Continentals partnered with Anthem Blue Cross /Blue Shield which supplied all of the pedometers. Twice, each month, Continentals walked with the students for 20 to 30 minutes and recorded the children’s number of steps. All three classroom participants received Awarded Certificates of Achievement, with ribbons given to the students in each classroom with the most steps.
First Place ribbons were awarded to George Pickering, Joel Spencer and Karis Reed. Maycee Reed, Promyss Elliott and Daviah Goodman won Second Place ribbons, with third Place Ribbons given to Sydnee Reed, Zamiya Johnson and Zachery Taylor.
The students received decorative bags with a bottle of water and fruit snacks. Parents, students and staff enjoyed the punch and cookies served at the reception.
The Continental Angels mentorship group, under the leadership of Continentals Natalie Bonilla and Hazel Jones also participated in the “Steps Challenge.” These girls meet monthly and participate in a variety of activities.
Continental Paula Morgan and the afterschool group of children at Lincoln Terrace Elementary School, also, participated in the program. They will receive their certificates at the school’s Award program.
On February 12, 2016, Health Chairperson, Continental Loretta Freeman, planned the “Zumba Party” at Forest Park Academy. Mr. Jason Wimbush provided an awesome Zumba workout and the Continentals provided water and energy bars for all participants.
Hurt Park Elementary School invited Continentals Gloria Randolph-King and Donna Lee to come and share the “Steps Challenge” program on February 29, 2016. The school also sponsored a “Let’s Move” program for students, parents and staff and wanted to know how they could get students involved in a similar program.
As the club year comes to an end, the Continentals are proud of all of their accomplishments and appreciative of all who helped in their achievements. The Health Committee has done an outstanding job promoting healthier lifestyles (exercising, eating healthier foods and drinking more water). Continental Loretta Freeman is Health Committee Chairperson and Donna W. Lee is president of the local chapter.
