The Roanoke Chapter Continental Societies, Inc. began the 2014-2015 “Holiday Healthy Snacks Program” on October 31, at Noah-Christian Academy and the Northwest Child Development Center. The main focus of this program is to educate children about healthier eating habits with a primary national goal of decreasing childhood obesity.
With the success of last year’s healthy snack program, the local chapter aspires to continue teaching children about the Food Pyramid and making healthier food choices, while including the benefits of exercise and drinking more water as diet alone is really not enough. “Let’s Move” was an initiative of First Lady Michelle Obama.
Last year, First Lady Michelle Obama challenged the nation to drink more water, so a bottle of water was included with each child’s healthy snack. That same trend will be repeated this year.
During Halloween the program at both centers focused on costumes for the evening while teaching the children ways to stay safe. Each child received a healthy snack to take home.
Continental Patricia Baker is chairperson of the local health component of HEER (Health, Education, Employment and Recreation). Arts and Humanities is another component that Continentals include in their annual programs for children.
Continental Gloria Randolph-King is president of the local chapter.
